Factual Fashion: Jacquard Edition

It can come in a luxurious floral print, a shiny paisley loafer, or even a ferocious tiger-printed sweater. But what do all three of these seemingly different items have in common? The answer is the use of a jacquard print or loom to create the fabric. Though Jacquard has roots in the early sixth century, its popularity began to rise in the early 19th century. Named after creator Joseph M. Jacquard, jacquard sparked a revolution in the creation of the look of embellishment in clothing. More than anything, the jacquard loom helped streamline the process of creating patterns such as damask, brocade, and matelassé, which were typically painstakingly produced by hand. What makes jacquard different is that the complex designs are woven into the fabric instead of being placed on top, which was the process in the early centuries. The resulting patterns are opulent to the eye and were coveted by women and men alike in the early centuries as a way to flaunt wealth. At one point in time, the jacquard fabric was only offered to the upper nobility on account of its luxe look.

Designers throughout time have consistently used jacquard fabrics including brocade, damask, and other intricate fabric embellishments in their collections. More than ever, designers are using jacquard embellishments on fabrics ranging from silk to cotton because of today’s increase in technology for textile looms. For example, Louis Vuitton throughout the brand’s more recent collections has seen a resurgence in the use of a brocade pattern. A purple and blue rose-patterned-brocade, placed against a silver background, sets the stage in the form of a show-stopping jumpsuit with ruffled shoulders or even a sleek deep-cut mini dress. Vuitton has also incorporated the elegant brocade look into an ocean-blue vest embellished to perfection in a variety of gold and silver hues.

Gucci is another fashion house that uses jacquard regularly in collections. From chunky loafers to silk headbands, the use of jacquard fabric gives Gucci its trademark “unusual-chic” style generated by creative director, Alessandro Michele. Canadian and Turkish designer Erdem Moralioglu has always championed the brocade throughout his many collections. This season, shown at London Fashion Week, was no different with looks having been inspired by Italian Principessa, Orietta Doria Pamphilj. Fuschia and cherry-red flowers adorned full-volume skirts in sleek black fabrics as the model’s cat-eyes darted on and off the runway.

Today the look and feel of a brocade or damask fabric still resonate as a lavish design, even as trends have passed throughout time. Maybe it is the use of many colors and shapes that draw fashion lovers in, or maybe it is the intricate hand-made look that resonates with others as well. Whatever the reason may be, the jacquard look will always reign when it comes to opulent style.

Hello there! Starting off Haute Couture Week in Paris, Proenza Schouler has decided to show their Spring 2018 collection in the company of couturiers like Dior and Chanel. Rodarte and other brands as well have decided to present their spring collections in Paris to gain better world recognition among other reasons. Proenza Schouler’s collection was just as fabulous as all the other collections I have had the joy of viewing. Though this collection veered more into the cocktail aspect of clothing, it was very wearable but with a little extra flair that made this collection so special. The color palette for one was perfect: crisp and clean with superb embellishments like feathers, lace, poppy prints, and of course beautiful accessories (take a look at those feathery earrings!). The cutouts and ruffles play off of the idea of hard-and-soft, and every season when I think of Proenza Schouler, I can only think of how the clothes can appeal practically to any woman whether she loves leather or lace. There is something for everyone.

Across the pond the action is heating up despite the low temperatures. First off, Christopher Kane’s show was absolutely delightful. I thoroughly enjoyed his more feminine approach and now can proudly say I want to own a pair of crocs, but only if they’re from his brand… The textures and plethora of colors kept me intrigued throughout the whole show, and if you look closely, another shoe design of his is heels with foam peeking out of course. He’s just trying to make heels more comfortable while starting probably one of the newest and most popular trends in the future.

Erdem was an absolute dream. Erdem Moralioglu’s inspiration behind his collection was the fantasy meeting of his two great grandmothers, and the result of that imaginary meeting was fantastic. I really love how he can make possibly the most frilly and girly dress imaginable but still manage to make it strong and innovative.

Even though Burberry’s collection is See-Now-Buy-Now for Spring 2017, it has to be one of Christopher Bailey’s best collections for the brand. I absolutely adored the use of white, khaki, and navy together, which may seem quite basic, but with the lace and the structure of the clothing, there was nothing basic about this collection.

Marques’ Almeida is street style gold. Any one of those looks could be seen on the street, and these looks are so wearable, fresh, and exciting because there is something for everyone in that collection.

J.W. Anderson was really fascinating to me. I can safely say every look I saw was like nothing I’d ever seen before, which, of course, is a testament to Anderson’s creativity. I especially loved the strapless dress with the raw zipper in the middle of the bust. It was so simple yet very elegant and new.

Mary Katrantzou was inspired by the movie Fantasia, and the clothes were exceptional. I miss her wacky prints and embellishments, but I think now she has progressed into a more mature designer, which translates in her clothes. Seeing the story of the movie play out in the clothes was a very smart way to make her collection even more cohesive.

Versus Versace always is just a badass show. Every. Time. This collection, neon mixed with grunge in the best way possible, and it made me want to buy a leather dress with slits up the side immediately. So that’s it for now! See you in Milan. Ciao!

Gosh, its been awhile since I have entered the wonderful world of blogging. I apologize greatly for my lack of blogging, I feel awful, but it has been a very busy time for me!! I am a senior in high school if that tells you anything but that’s all I’ll say. No excuses its time for Haute Couture week. Now onto that.

First of all I practically loved everything I saw this season. Starting off with Atelier Versace I was saddened when it was announced that there was no show to take place in Paris. But the clothes are such a spectacle themselves a show just would have emphasized their wonder. I enjoyed the pictures released but really only two pieces caught my eye that were heavily embellished.

Chanel Couture is always one of my favorite shows to see. Mr. Lagerfeld never ceases to amaze me with his innovation and creativity every season. And this season was no exception. The color scheme was wonderful, and, of course, I loved the bright silver specks and feathers adorning practically every look. Another part of the show that I enjoyed was the pearl anklets with the heels!!

Dior was a wonderland, literally. The garden scheme was beautifully paired with the clothes shown. I loved the tapered waists and full skirts that are so classic but with the new creative director’s vision, they seemed fresh, new and unexpected.

Giambattista Valli is always a show to watch even if just for the voluminous finale looks that are always such fun to see. But I was really fascinated by the 60’s inspiration that was evident in the short minidress and the flowing gown with the floral pattern.

Schiaparelli is always an interesting show to see in my opinion. The clothes especially the patterns and shapes are quite unlike what you usually see. I especially enjoyed the classic lobster print on a certain dress.

Finally, Valentino, I feel like I am floating on a cloud just thinking about this show. The design houses’s new direction is absolute perfection to me. It’s feminine and dainty as shown with the tissue-paper textured sleeves. But then I see a pair of stark white paints with a strong overcoat and now I’m convinced this show has a bit of an edge to it. It’s a combination of everything anyone (especially me!) would ever want. So there you have it! My first review in dare I say five months… I shudder at that thought, but I promise I will write soon. Till then.

That’s all about I can say. Alessandro Michele has done it again with his extravagant “more is more” dressing during his reign at Gucci. And I absolutely adore it. There are so many little intricacies of every item of clothing, and I could get lost in it. I dream about finally being able to be face-to-face with his clothing and being able to run my hands through all of it. So many colors and textures and patterns are all rolled up into one incredible concoction. Every outfit tells a different story from a different person’s point of view. The girl in the gold-flared pantsuit is the polar opposite of the girl with the orange and zebra-filled coat.  I cannot wait till next season and will certainly be waiting with bated breath.

Pre Fall never at first made much sense to me but after consideration and looking at the fashion offered recently, I had an epiphany! Its like having Christmas twice a year (along with Resort collections). Pre Fall is a little snapshot into the upcoming seasons and the fashion usually is offered right now to buy, which is fabulous. But now onto my faves…

Oscar de la Renta was a new take this season and I really enjoyed it. Every image sparked some newfound excitement inside of me and that is what fashion is all about: feeling something spectacular through the appearance of clothing. Peter Copping adds his own flair to the original brand in the best way possible.

Red Valentino is like Valentino young girls like me would die to wear right now. (Not that I would not mid wearing grown up Valentino myself! Hey any kind of Valentino is good enough for me!) The combination of shapes and colors was exhilarating and gives much inspiration to me.

Chanel, I mean “hello, this is the real deal”. I cannot even express the adoration I have for Karl’s genius. Every season is something new and fresh which is hard for being a part of a brand for so long. But Karl does it! The clothes are nothing less of spectacular and decadently gorgeous. I want it all!

Michael Kors is so right now and always has something every fashion girl is coveting at the moment. This collection was quite new I feel with the embellished coats and the frivolous feathers. It was just the right amount of drama.

Gucci. It deserves its own one word sentence. It is so luxe and just so inspirational. It makes me feel joyful and that sometimes is an aspect that is missing in the fashion we experience today. I adored every piece, it takes me to another time. I mean I feel like I have never experience something like this before.

BONUS: JONATHAN SIMKHAI. My new love. The recent winner of the CFDA Fashion Fund Award winner caught me by surprise. He is so creative with his shapes! It was feminine and very strong at the same time. And that is the type of woman I want to be.

London Fashion Week. Just a jump across the pond, right? Well I can say for those who made the trek, boy was it worth it. Christopher Kane was a collection consisting of his wonderful mix of crazy colors. He said he was inspired by a car crash and the collection was a mad dash of color and shapes that worked effortlessly together. Erdem is every girls dream. A dream of pussy cat bows and delicate laces were seen throughout the collection. J.W. Anderson completely blew me away. The electrifying colors with the voluminous shapes were breathtaking and a breath of fresh air. But I will say my favorite collection would have to be the divine Simone Rocha. Everything about the collection screamed elegance but in a new and exhilarating way. With the criss-cross harnesses and the frothy skirts and dresses, my mind was left racing. My heart too.

I will start this post off with my highlights of NYFW. Oscar de la Renta was pure grace and polished beauty. Peter Copping has taken on so much and he has kept with Mr. de la Renta’s aesthetic but also he has made it his own with his beautiful designs. Proenza Schouler was everything I would have wanted and more. The classic color palette and the intricate detailing on the clothes was so wonderful. Also the shoes were something else! Prabal Gurung, one of the first designers I started following religiously, made me believe in him even more with this recent collection. The inspiration came from his hometown of Nepal and the clothes symbolized his love of his country. His luxe details and sensual silhouettes were his signature. Finally Marc Jacobs. I was left speechless. It was a thrilling show and the clothes just kept getting better and better as each model sauntered down the runway. Every look was so different yet they worked so well together. It was a chic circus but with a good-ole American look to the collection as well.

In the second installment of my fashion month coverage, I decided I would do a separate little post just for designers you may not know quite yet. With these specific looks I have chosen, I hope this sparks your interest in checking them out. One of my favorite designers in recent years that I have discovered is Rosie Assoulin. Her take on new shapes and electrifying colors leaves me wanting more, more, more! Her formal wear is breathtaking and her day wear as well is just as exciting and something I covet immediately. I have my favorite blogger on the planet, Leandra Medine of Man Repeller to thank graciously for helping me find my eternal love. (P.S. the pants she makes are out of this world amazing)

Ahhh New York Fashion Week has come and gone but I am still relishing in the fabulous clothes sent out this season. Now we are onto London and I am loving what I have been seeing so far. But back to NY, this spring 2016 season was something else! With all the exciting new clothes and wonderful locations of the shows, I barely focused on any school work. This required my full attention! And boy did it get my attention!

Adam Selman, man oh man, I am starting to fall for his clothes harder than ever before. The white pants with the fowy top is what I want to LIVE in, forever!

Alexander Wang showcased what he does best: his super sensual and super cool clothes. He makes it look so easy to look so sexy yet kind of rocker-ish. He celebrated his tenth anniversary and this show was quite a celebration.

Altuzarra. I have no words, the way Joseph Altuzarra oozes sex appeal with great femininity amazes me. The slits are his signature and they were better than ever this season. (Check out his take on the espadrille, I am already coveting them)

How can one not love the Project Runway alum Christian Siriano? His personality is addicting just like his clothes. He always keeps me entertained and is becoming an even better designer as time passes on.

Derek Lam was quite polished yet free in one way to describe it. He always is so far ahead in thinking and it gives me excitement to see his shows whenever possible. (the cut-out shoulder made it big this season)

Givenchy brought me to tears; not just for the exquisite clothing but also for his meaningful reasoning on why he held the show in New York instead of Paris this season. Riccardo Tisci held the show on 9/11 and made his guests wait a longer amount of time than usual to take in the wonderful skyline of New York from Pier 26.  His great respect for the city and the people apart of it moved me to tears. But the clothes as well, made me heart race and the decadent materials were just a dream to take in.

Diane Von Furstenberg just keeps getting better. Every season leaves me wanting more and every aspect of the show from the hair down to the shoes is always on point. The brand is so classic and an integral part of American fashion but it has modernized extremely well and has retained its greatness.
