For Mr. Lagerfeld

It is hard to wrap my mind around the events of today. Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld has passed away. This is a statement hard to believe and something I do not want to even process. The immense sadness and crushed feeling has been lingering with many today, including myself. With extreme sadness, a realization came to me that talking about Karl Lagerfeld’s pure ingenuity and genius will now be a topic of the past. Though his legacy will always continue on, many will be feeling melancholic for his designs and wonderful attributes– including his photography skills, generosity, and his sense of humor.

When I first began to take a serious interest in fashion, my go to brand for extravagant and classic fashion, like many people, was Chanel. When you wanted to know what was going to be “next” in the fashion world, Mr. Lagerfeld always pointed us towards the light of a new age of fashion. Every season something new and beautiful would always be produced, yet no season was the same as another. He created opportunities to take fashion places it less commonly goes like in Dallas, Texas for a Métiers d’Art show and Havana, Cuba almost immediately after the country was open to visitors, and metaphorically like his recent Egyptian themed collection. Always inventive, he excelled and performed exceptionally time and time again collection after collection. Chanel, synonymous with the likes of founder Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld himself, is the epitome of innovation today. The storied brand produces over five collections a year– a massive feat for any designer. More than that, Mr. Lagerfeld in his later age still was involved in the process of creating the collections daily.

Lagerfeld with his work at Chanel and Fendi has created worlds that fashion lovers alike want to envelope themselves in. He created atmospheres that only heightened the clothing, not take away from it. The massive iceberg or the waterfall or even the spaceship are representations of his pure imagination. I will yearn for his sets that give us glimpses into his mind and his reasoning behind choosing them too. I have loved seeing his innovation play out in other ways in addition to the miraculous clothing he made.

Though I did not know Karl Lagerfeld his work touched me, moved me deeply, and most of all confirmed that fashion, as beautiful and fanciful it may seem from the surface, can shock our cores and touch us all in the most indescribable ways. He often left me speechless because of the wonder of his work. How we all will miss him so.

Below is my second article for my school’s magazine. I have always been inspired by how color can affect our moods, transport us to different places, and even bring up nostalgic times. This article was a fascinating write for me, and I hope you will be energized to invigorate some “Ultra Violet” into your life!

“Inventive and Imaginative, Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.” Pantone, the global authority on color, chose a vibrant and lush variation of the purple hue for its color of the year. Founded in 1962, Pantone established itself as a company that manufactured color cards for cosmetics. As time went on, the company gained fame for its color-matching system that identically matched colors to swatches. Fast forward to 2000 and Pantone was still held in high regards by design professionals everywhere. When the company in the early 2000’s introduced coffee mugs available in every color imaginable, the mugs set off a surge of interest in the Pantone company even more so. When selecting a specific color, whether it be a burnt orange called “Flame” or a light beige-y pink called “Pale Dogwood,” these mugs left plenty of room for self-expression in way of drinking coffee. If there’s any color you’re thinking of, Pantone has it (and even has a specific name for it).

But in the year 2000, Pantone established itself again not only as a color company but as a purveyor of color trends to come by creating a “Color of the Year.” In 2000, it was Cerulean, in 2012 it was “Tangerine Tango,” and so on. Now in 2018, the princely purple color of “Ultra Violet” reigns. According to Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, this year’s color suggests the “mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead,” and that there are “discoveries beyond where we are now.” David Bowie and Prince (Purple Rain, anyone?), after their recent passings, are noted as influencers of this choice of color as these two musical icons represent free expression and non-conformity, which is becoming more and more of an accepted lifestyle in our society today. Pantone has always been a company known for its choice in outstanding color, but more than that and more than ever, Pantone makes us see that color is more than just a shade of a dress or the pigment in a lipstick. Color really is an essential component of our lives that helps us express who we really are.

This summer I embarked on an expedition to a place not many people want to go. I went south of Manhattan and parked myself at the Pratt Institute for three glorious weeks. I was at Pratt for its summer program for people my age who want to make a career in the arts in some way.

I considered myself a Brooklynite. I obviously blended in by stuffing my face with almost too delicious foods like ramen burgers and cinnamon-sugar doughnuts as big as your head (that double as a lip exfoliator on account of the excess sugar) all the while when checking out the Brooklyn flea market on Saturdays.

I walked the walk, a swift quick pace so fast you forget that there is a multitude of your classmates behind you. I fell in love with Brooklyn. And I fell in love with Pratt. A beautiful campus located in Clinton Hill with so much to offer. My class consisted of 4 other lovely gals who let me into their lives so quickly; it was hard to fathom that I had met them just days ago. We formed a little tribe, looking out for one another in the city and had the best time going on food tours all over the five boroughs.

I have to admit. I had always had a little fear of New York. Don’t get me wrong, it’s the greatest city in the world as far as I’m concerned, but it’s a bit overwhelming at times when you get caught in the rain with all your homework drenched, and you have to walk 15 minutes until you get back to your dorm. So my time at Pratt was a bit of a learning experience. Not only did I FINALLY understand how the subway system works, I even went to the Metro Tech museum for the history of it (which I highly recommend). I walked down the street with a little bit more confidence knowing I was on the right street heading in the right direction, which was usually to the nearest Zara.

I never understood why people were so hesitant to go south and discover Brooklyn. Like Miranda on Sex and the City when she had to move to Brooklyn, she considered it the end of civilization as we know it. Brooklyn is vastly different from Manhattan. People aren’t crowding in on the street that much, and there is a lot more sky as my father would note.

But that’s the thing I love about Manhattan. The towering buildings. People rushing by heading off to who knows where. And possibly most of all, the smell of roasted peanuts as you enter Central Park. It makes my heart melt.

But Brooklyn is refreshing. There are trees galore and families strolling their fashionable babies everywhere. I just wonder why it ever took people so long to get here… But the longer I was in Brooklyn, sometimes it made me miss Manhattan more. But I would love taking the subway back to Brooklyn getting off at Clinton-Washington and take a stroll around campus. It’s the hard thing about New York: You fall in love with so much so fast.

As one of my final assignments in my Teen Vogue x Parsons program, I had to go to my local retail outlet aka the mall to find some displays that were compelling to me. I found the Louis Vuitton display breathtaking as always. I am always so amazed at how wonderful and different each display is. I cannot even comprehend what I see because it is so magnificent and truly inspiring and fresh. It is like nothing I have seen before. And then the inside of the store as well is beautiful with bags in small shelving units from floor to ceiling so that each accessory gets its own shining moment.

Helllllooooo, its me! In this part of my Teen Vogue x Parsons assignment I learned more about my readers. Yes all of you out there in the world! I receive mostly views from girls living in the United States of America. Mostly my readers look on the website from around 10 to 11 A.M. It is so fascinating to know I have readers from around the world on my blog. I just received a view from Georgia not the state, the country! I am honored that you all have decided to read my blog and the best is yet to come. Happy 2016! xoxo

Another part of my Parsons x Teen Vogue program is to make a mockup of my signature bag. I, in this case, decided to make a box clutch as my signature bag. So I gathered up some card stock and fired up the hot glue gun and made my mockup. It was time consuming but I feel worth it in the end to see my idea come to life.

I had to include my production cost grid if I were to make this bag in a real life setting.

Light canvas (one yard): $4.99

Black Button: $1.79

Hot glue gun: $12.99

Glue sticks for hot glue gun: $3.99

Labor ($8 per hour) @ 20% ($4.75): $28.51

Retail price: $30.00

Another assignment from my Teen Vogue x Parsons program was to find the difference between clothing sizings at a large store that offers various brands. I went to one store, (which I probably should not name) and to my surprise the clothes were mostly the same fit in each size! I tried on either three or four of the same size in different brands and they all were around the same fit for me. So that was a big relief knowing that I can trust that store for a true size in every garment.

I usually do not talk about other things other than fashion but I think this is pretty interesting!  I have embarked on a fashion program Parsons has decided to do with Teen Vogue. Its amazing so far I cannot believe how much I have learned. One of my assignments was to figure out production costs for a small wire and pebble ring I made. Long story short you really can make a profit if you find cheaper materials for your product. At first buying my materials the production cost plus profit came out to be $8.38. But then with getting my materials from cheaper sources online the production cost with profit came out to be $6.45. It really does make a difference! So for a non-mathy girl like myself, this type of math problem is one I would gladly solve!

Hi there everyone! I have been in New York the past couple of days so that is why I have been so inactive on here! But I just wanted to share some pictures of my trip. I love New York so very much and it holds such dear meaning to me. My parents met here and my sister was born here ( I was born in New Jersey so it’s kind of close). Every time  I come I experience some new wonderful feeling and every time I leave, it is impossible for me to do so. It’s a spectacular place where I hope to live some day. I know in my heart I will make it happen.

But onto my clothes because this is what this blog is all about! I apologize for not taking any pictures of my outfits. I was just so busy and didn’t have a spare moment to snap a pic! And I will say I loved every outfit I wore here. But the staple piece I had was this furry pink coat I wore everyday. It is from my trip to Italy and it is essentially the most luxe and divine coat I own. I am wearing it in the picture with my reflection in the mirror. I promise I will upload a post of the outfits I wore later! Oh and the purple pants and turtleneck was something I almost packed but I thought this outfit was too fabulous to leave out!
